Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. An air conditioner or heat pump counts on its refrigerant to cool and dehumidify the air before it’s streamed back into your home. This liquid is contained within the coils of a cooling system, but one of the most widely used refrigerants that’s been in use for many years – the R-22 (Freon) is now being gradually eliminated in response to environmental concerns. In fact, this phase-out was mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Clean Air Act. Production of R-22 will cease by 2020. Introducing R-410A R-410A is EPA-recognized, chlorine-free and ozone-friendly. That means it’ll keep your AC running cool without damaging the environment. Even better news, Lennox’s most highly efficient systems are designed to use this AC refrigerant, which can help your system operate efficiently. The same Lennox systems are known for reliability, quiet operation and improved dehumidification, so you can stay comfortable. Additional Considerations At Superior Comfort Systems in Hendersonville, our cooling models can work with R-410A. If your system was installed before 2010, you may want to consider replacing your cooling system now, before R-22 is scarce. Some manufacturers offer alternate refrigerants such as R-407C, R-438A and R-422, however, they may not work with an R-22 AC or heat pump and could compromise your system’s performance.
